Dubai: The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has once again reminded the public about the correct way to use the new dirham symbol.

In a video shared today on its official X account, the bank explained the key rules that residents, businesses, and retailers should follow.

β€œAs every symbol has value, its use comes with responsibility,” the CBUAE said in the video, which pointed out eight common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Wrong placement β€“ The symbol must always be before the numeral, never after.
  2. No spacing issues β€“ Leave sufficient space between the symbol and the number.
  3. No distortion β€“ Do not stretch, skew, or alter the shape.
  4. Respect structure β€“ Maintain its original geometric proportions.
  5. Height matters β€“ Match the symbol’s height to the numeral’s height.
  6. Text direction β€“ Ensure the symbol aligns with the text’s direction.
  7. Clear surrounding space β€“ Leave one-third of its height as empty space around it.
  8. Strong contrast β€“ Keep enough color contrast against the background.

Where it should be used

  • Invoices, receipts, and POS systems – Always placed before the number, not together with β€œAED” or β€œDh.”
  • Retail and price tags – Must appear before the product price.
  • Digital platforms – Should be used consistently across apps, banking portals, and websites.

Where it should not be used

  • In company logos, app icons, or decorative branding.
  • Together with β€œAED” or β€œDh” abbreviations.
  • In legal or official documents where β€œDirhams” must be written in full.
