Dubai is establishing itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by implementing ground-breaking initiatives that demonstrate its commitment to innovation and future preparation. The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) oversees an ambitious effort to train one million individuals in AI prompting over the next three years. This program is the first of its type in the world, and it aims to develop Dubai into a major AI powerhouse.
The Vision for a Future-Ready City
At the introduction of the ‘One Million AI Prompters’ program, Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the DFF Board of Trustees, underscored Dubai’s ambition to be the most future-ready city. “We want to prepare for the AI era by developing expertise and skills that support global technological change and put Dubai at the forefront of innovation,” he said.
This program is part of the UAE’s overall aim to shift from an oil-dependent economy to an AI powerhouse. By 2031, the UAE hopes that artificial intelligence will account for 40% of its GDP. To do this, the UAE is heavily investing in AI, attracting renowned scientists, assisting start-ups, and even appointing Omar Al Olama, the world’s first Minister of State for AI, in 2017.
The Importance of AI Prompt Engineering in future Dubai
AI prompt engineering is crucial for realizing the full potential of generative AI models. It entails creating precise and effective instructions for AI systems to produce desired results, which might range from generating creative material to solving complex problems. This ability is expected to be one of the most crucial in the future workplace, therefore the ‘One Million AI Prompters’ program is a key step toward workforce development.
Minister Omar Al Olama emphasized the practical relevance of quick engineering, saying, “We want to demonstrate people that there is a wide range of application cases. These tools are accessible to both technical and non-technical users.” This effort will provide individuals with the essential skills to leverage AI’s potential, thereby improving both their professional chances and general quality of life.
The Global Prompt Engineering Championship organized by Dubai
To launch the ‘One Million AI Prompters’ program, Dubai organized the first Global Prompt Engineering Championship. This event drew thousands of entries from about 100 nations, with individuals competing in categories ranging from literature and art to traditional coding. The competition demonstrated the broad applicability of AI technologies, with each prompt referring to a specific request made to a language model (such as ChatGPT) that provides a response.
Thirty finalists from 13 countries were invited to Dubai to compete for the title of best prompt engineer in three categories. The winners were:
- Art Category: Megan Fowkes (Australia)
- Coding Category: Ajay Cyril (India)
- Literature Category: Aditya Nair (India)
The Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DCAI) provided one million dirhams (approximately 273,000 US dollars) in prize money for the winners, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding AI talent.
A Strategic Partner for Global Tech Giants
Global IT companies have paid close heed to the UAE’s AI ambitions. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM participated in the first championship with workshops and expressed an interest in future AI partnerships. The UAE’s proactive approach involves building an AI university in 2019 and launching a $100 billion AI fund through its sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala.
Microsoft’s recent $1.5 billion investment in G42, the biggest UAE-based AI technology holding company, demonstrates the Gulf state’s expanding presence in the AI business. “This strategic investment will enhance the UAE’s position as a global AI hub and provide further opportunities for partners and customers to innovate and grow,” stated a spokeswoman for Microsoft.
Conclusion
Dubai’s ‘One Million AI Prompters’ program is a significant move toward becoming a prominent worldwide hub for artificial intelligence. By training a million people in AI prompting, holding international competitions, and attracting large tech investments, Dubai is setting the way for a future in which AI plays a fundamental role in its economy and society. This program not only prepares Dubai for the AI age, but it also paves the way for other cities and countries looking to harness the power of artificial intelligence.
Dubai’s continued innovation and investment in AI strengthens its position at the vanguard of global technology growth, propelling a vision of a smart, future-ready metropolis.
