A total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “Blood Moon,” is set to occur on the night of March 13 into the early hours of March 14, 2025. During this event, the Earth will align directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall upon the Moon and imparting it with a reddish hue.

In the United Arab Emirates, including Sharjah, the eclipse will be partially visible. The Moon will rise already in the penumbral phase, with the partial eclipse phase starting shortly after moonrise. However, the totality phase, where the Moon appears entirely red, will not be visible as it will occur before the Moon rises in your location.

Why Does the Moon Turn Red?
During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth’s shadow (umbra) completely covers the Moon. Instead of turning black, the Moon appears reddish because Earth’s atmosphere filters and bends sunlight, allowing only longer-wavelength red light to reach the Moon. This process is similar to why the sky appears red at sunrise or sunset.
