Google Gemini apps offer a powerful way to enhance the assistant’s capabilities and integrate it more deeply with popular services. For instance, enabling the WhatsApp extension in Gemini lets you ask the AI to send messages or make calls directly through the app. Now, Google is gradually introducing a Google Photos integration for Gemini, currently available to a limited group of users. With this feature, you can ask the assistant to display your recent selfies, retrieve specific details from your photos, and more.

On its support page, Google explains how activating the Google Photos app within Gemini can significantly enhance your photo-searching experience. Once enabled, you’ll be able to search your photo library right from the Gemini app using smart, natural prompts.

You can locate images based on:

  • Face groups or saved relationships in your Google Photos
  • The location or date a photo was taken
  • Descriptions of what’s in the image
  • The context of your current conversation with Gemini

Simply use prompts like “Find my photos of [person/place/thing],” “Show me recent selfies,” or “Find my photos of landscapes.” You can also include “@Google Photos” or “my photos” in your query to directly tap into your photo library through Gemini.

When Gemini displays a photo, you can tap it to open a larger version directly in the Google Photos app. The same goes for albums — tapping one will take you straight to it in Google Photos. Even better, on Android phones and tablets, you can drag and drop images from Gemini’s overlay into other apps. However, keep in mind that this drag-and-drop functionality only supports one image at a time and is exclusive to Android devices.

Additionally, if you export a Gemini conversation that includes content from Google Photos, only the text will be saved — the images themselves won’t be included.

Gemini currently doesn’t support actions like creating collages, editing photos, adding names or labels, or managing albums.

According to Google, the Google Photos integration within Gemini is being gradually rolled out to a limited group of invited users. At this time, the feature is only available to users in the U.S. who are 18 years or older, and it supports prompts exclusively in English — similar to many other Gemini apps.
