The UAE has confirmed shorter working hours for private-sector employees during the holy month of Ramadan. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) announced that daily working hours will be reduced by two hours throughout the month.
Under the directive, companies in the private sector may introduce flexible or remote work arrangements, provided they remain within the reduced daily working hours and align with operational requirements.

Typically, employees in the UAE work eight to nine hours per day. During Ramadan, this will be reduced by two hours daily. Any work performed beyond the adjusted schedule will be treated as overtime and compensated in accordance with the UAE Labour Law.
Public sector timings have also been revised. From Monday to Thursday, government employees will work from 9am to 2.30pm, while Friday working hours will be from 9am to 12pm. Exceptions apply to employees whose roles require different schedules.

The annual reduction in working hours allows residents additional time for family, prayer and reflection during the holy month. Human resource professionals note that while the initial days of fasting may be challenging, shorter working hours often lead to improved focus, better time management and increased productivity.

When will Ramadan begin?
Astronomical calculations indicate that the crescent moon marking the start of Ramadan 1447 AH is unlikely to be visible on Tuesday, February 17. As a result, countries that rely on confirmed moon sightings are expected to complete 30 days of Shaaban on Wednesday, February 18.
Accordingly, Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday, February 19, in the UAE and several other countries, subject to official confirmation.
